Every product in your store competes on Google with two lines of text: the SEO title (the blue link) and the meta description (the gray text below it). They are your only free ad in the search results β and most stores leave them empty or duplicated.
The SEO title: 60 characters that decide everything
Google shows about 60 characters of the title. The formula that works best for products:
[Product] + [differentiating attribute] + [store brand or benefit]
- β
Product 1450 - My Store - β
Black Industrial Pendant Lamp 3 Lights | UBID Lighting
Golden rules:
- The main keyword goes first. "Men's Running Shoes Pegasus" beats "Pegasus, the shoes you were looking for".
- One unique title per product. Duplicate titles confuse Google and cannibalize each other.
- No ALL CAPS and no symbols like βΊβ . They lower clicks and look like spam.
The meta description: the art of earning the click
It doesn't rank directly, but it determines your CTR (how many of those who see you choose you). And a high CTR, sustained over time, does end up improving positions.
The 150-160 character formula: what it is + 2 concrete benefits + a call to action.
"Industrial 3-light pendant lamp in black iron. Perfect for stylish living rooms and kitchens. Free shipping over $80. See it in detail!"
Mistakes that kill it:
- Leaving it empty: Google grabs any text from the page, almost always the worst snippet.
- Repeating the same one everywhere: to Google, that signals a neglected page.
- Listing loose keywords ("lamp, pendant, black, iron, living"): nobody clicks on that.
A real before and after
A typical untouched product:
touch lamp 3 levels β no meta description
The same product optimized:
Touch Lamp with 3 Warm Light Levels | Modern & Dimmable "Bedside lamp with touch control and 3 warm light levels. Tap the base and you're set. Interest-free installments. Get yours today!"
Same product, same store. The second one shows up in more searches and turns more views into clicks.
